The Role of Music During the Holocaust
HOLOCAUST EDUCATiON LECTURE-RECiTAL PROGRAM OFFERiNG
My interest in uncovering and advocating for flute music by banned and persecuted composers began in 2018, including but not limited to repertoire connected to the Holocaust. This work deepened in 2022 when I was invited to collaborate with the UNO's Samuel Bak Museum and Learning Center to curate a music series in conjunction with the museum’s rotating art exhibitions. Since 2023, my research has focused specifically on the role of music during the Holocaust, viewed through the unique perspective of the flute, leading to public lectures beginning in 2024 and my inclusion on the Humanities Nebraska Speakers Bureau roster that same year. In April and May 2026, I will spend a month in Europe conducting archival and site-based research to identify additional flute composers who were persecuted during the Holocaust, with plans to share these findings in late 2026 and early 2027. In parallel, and in continued partnership with the Bak Museum, I have begun preliminary research into the role of music during the genocides in Bosnia, Rwanda, and Cambodia.
