Professorship Application for Christine E. Beard

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

The professorship guidelines state that 3-5 supporting documents are to be included. I have included 5 categories of supporting materials below, as it is impossible to select merely 5 individual events/performances that would demonstrate my national/international reputation as a respected performer and artist in my field. Links to related video files have been included when available. This list only includes activities since my promotion to full professor in 2013.

I. SIGNIFICANT FLUTE CONVENTION APPEARANCES

  • The National Flute Association (NFA) convention is the world’s largest flute organization and convention, boasting between 4,000-6,000 attendees worldwide each year. The NFA is the premier resource worldwide and is “valued by its members and relevant to all interested in the flute.” Participation in the annual NFA convention is by juried selection, with over 500 proposals submitted and less than 20% accepted each year. It is also considered rare for any performer to be selected or invited to perform in more than 2 events in any single convention. Though I have been on the program of 15 conventions since 2002, I am only including those since 2013, when my national/international reputation was firmly established within the NFA (i.e. when they began to include me in larger events and projects).

NFA 2018: The Orlando convention marked my 15th NFA appearance since 2002. This year my engagements included 1.) the NFA premiere of "Milonga Carmaga" for piccolo and piano by Exequiel Mantega [VIDEO]; 2.) a Venezuelan piccolo duo entitled "!Que si te lo digo!" by Ricardo Teruel; 3.) performing a feature concert with the International Superflutes Collective and the International Liaison Ensemble; 4.) serving as a judge for the final round of the NFA Piccolo Artist Competition; 5.) performing for the Flutopia pre-convention benefit concert; 6.) and my 3rd year serving on the NFA piccolo committee.

PROGRAM 1 | PROGRAM 2

NFA 2014:  In Chicago, I performed in 1.) a concert featuring 12 of the most prominent piccolo players from around the world; 2.) I premiered a new piccolo solo [VIDEO] by David Loeb and was asked to share the stage with internationally renowned low flutes specialist Peter Sheridan in a duo for piccolo and subcontrabass flute by Australian composer Houston Dunleavy (this is where Mary-Ann Archer heard me perform, as mentioned above in NFA 2015). I was also invited by Canadian composer Derek Charke to perform on 3.) an entire concert featuring the Charke Collective, a group of professional flutists from North America hand-picked by the composer to premiere his music.

NFA 2013:  In New Orleans, I was 1.) invited to perform a duo concerto with the NFA flute orchestra in the opening ceremonies concert with Sarah Jackson (piccolo, Los Angeles Philharmonic); 2.) I gave the world premiere of “To the Nth Degree” for piccolo & piano [VIDEO] written for me by UK composer Matthew Smith; 3.) was invited to collaborate in the world premiere of “Raga Nau” [VIDEO] (listed in program as “New Orleans Flute Quintet”) by Derek Charke; and 4.) I was invited to perform in the closing ceremonies in the International Flute Orchestra of the Americas - a professional group compiled by Angelieta Floyd, who I met and worked with in Costa Rica (NOTE: this is where I met Cesar Vivanco, director of the Peru Festival, who – after hearing me play – invited me to be a guest artist at his festival in 2014).

  • The Festival Internacional de Flautistas en el Centrol del Mundo held in Quito, Ecuador is the second oldest flute festival in South America (27 years). Organized by Luciano Carrera, principal flute in the National Symphony of Ecuador (retired), he invited me to make my 1st guest artist appearance at this significant festival in 2017. [VIDEO EXCERPT] (My participation in this festival yielded 2 new graduate students from Ecuador who have come to UNO to study with me for their Master of Music degrees beginning in August 2108).

ECUADOR PROGRAM 2017

  •

  • The Festival Internacional de Flautistas in Lima, Peru is the oldest flute festival in all of South America (31 years). Established by Cesar Vivanco, professor of flute at the National Conservatory of Peru, appearance at the festival is by invitation from Maestro Vivanco. I met and performed alongside Cesar in the Flute Orchestra of the Americas at the 2013 National Flute Association Convention, after which he invited me to be a guest artist at the XXIX Peru festival. I was invited to appear as a guest artist at this festival in 2014, 2015 & 2016. My experiences in Peru also inspired my spring 2017 sabbatical research project - dedicated to researching and collecting music for flute by living Peruvian composers - entitled "The Flute in Peru in the 21st Century."  Highlights of the project was presented as a lecture-recital at UNO in October 2017. I have been a regular guest artist at this biannual festival since 2013; I will return for my 4th festival in 2019.
